Safety Precautions For Cranes

Why take safety precautions for cranes?

Safety precautions for cranes are essential to ensure the safety of workers, the equipment, and the surrounding environment. Cranes are large, complex machines used to lift heavy loads, and improper use or failure to follow safety protocols can lead to accidents, injuries, or fatalities.

Advantages of Safety Precautions for Cranes

Safety measures like regular inspections, proper training, and the use of protective gear greatly lower the risk of crane-related accidents, such as tipping, load drops, or collisions; By implementing safety protocols, workers feel safer and more valued, which can improve their morale and productivity. Adhering to safety regulations helps companies comply with OSHA and other industry standards, avoiding fines, shutdowns, and legal issues;Regular safety inspections and preventive maintenance can identify issues before they become serious, reducing repair costs and extending the lifespan of crane equipment.When cranes operate safely, there are fewer disruptions due to accidents or equipment malfunctions. Safe crane operations reduce the likelihood of accidents that might cause environmental damage, such as hazardous material spills.

Bridge crane

1. Before operation, check whether the mechanical equipment, electrical parts and safety protection devices are intact and reliable, and conduct a trial lift before lifting. After confirming that everything is normal, it can be put into use.

2. Obey the signal command during operation, and do not hang the hoisted objects in the air when the operation is interrupted.

3. It is forbidden to hang or leave objects on people's heads;

4. When the hook is running without load, it should be lifted by more than one person.

5. When hanging, the angle between the hanging ropes should not be less than 120° to avoid excessive pressure on the hanging ropes.

6. It is strictly forbidden to inspect and repair during the hoisting operation. Special personnel should supervise and cooperate with the maintenance during maintenance.

7. After the operation, the sleepers should be locked, and the operation should not be forced in strong winds and bad weather above the horizontal plane.

Electric lift

1. Before use, make sure that the brakes and limiters are reliable. Adjust the upper and lower limit blocks before lifting objects. It is strictly forbidden to lift objects that exceed the rated load.

2. The power supply should be cut off before maintenance and inspection, and maintenance and inspection must be carried out under no-load conditions.

3. It is forbidden to hang or leave objects on people's heads;

4. During the lifting process, it is strictly forbidden to hang the objects obliquely or crookedly.

5. For electric hoists without descent restrictions, when the hook is in the lowest position, the wire rope on the hoist must be guaranteed to have two circumferences.

6. When lifting with a turn, the operator must stand opposite the turning direction and confirm that there are no other operators in the turning direction before lifting.

Gantry Crane

1.Inspect the gantry crane for any signs of wear, damage, or malfunction. Ensure the hoist, hooks, and other load-bearing parts are intact.Verify that electrical connections and components, including cables and power supply, are in good condition.Look for frays, wear, or damage on the wire ropes and chains.Make sure load limit indicators are functional and accurately display capacity.

2.Only trained and certified operators should operate gantry cranes.Operators should be trained on emergency shutdown procedures and actions to take during accidents or breakdowns.

3. Never exceed the crane's load capacity, which should be clearly indicated on the crane.Use appropriate rigging methods, ensuring the load is properly balanced and secured.Never lift loads at an angle, as this could destabilize the crane.Ensure the load is clear of obstacles, people, and equipment.

4. Use hand signals or communication tools: Operators and ground staff should use clear, standardized signals or radios for communication.Prevent jerky or sudden movements when lifting or moving a load to minimize the risk of instability.Make sure the area beneath and around the load is clear of personnel.

5.Avoid operating cranes in strong winds, rain, or other adverse weather conditions that could affect stability or visibility.Ensure the ground or surface where the gantry crane is used is stable and even, particularly with portable gantry cranes.

6.Know the location of emergency stop buttons and test their functionality regularly.Ensure the crane is equipped with an overload warning system to alert operators of excessive loads.Establish clear evacuation routes in case of emergencies, and make sure personnel are familiar with them.

7.Conduct routine maintenance as per manufacturer recommendations, including lubricating moving parts and checking mechanical and electrical components.Keep records of all maintenance and inspections to ensure accountability and compliance with safety standards.
