How to operate common devices in crane cabs

The crane cab manoeuvring devices are generally reasonably arranged and clearly marked and are easy to manoeuvre. The person using the manoeuvring device must be aware of the markings, purpose and direction of operation on or near all joysticks or pedals in order to avoid misuse of the device.

Generally speaking, the arrangement of the crane manoeuvring device operated by the joystick and foot pedal has a general rule. The most basic form of crane manoeuvre arrangement can generally be added or subtracted from the handle or pedal shown in the diagram as required.

Handle 1 is the slewing manoeuvre. Forward (away from the driver's direction) push the handle, the turntable to the right turn (manoeuvring room left or right); Manoeuvring room right crane for the left turn; handle in the middle of the position to cut off the rotary power. Pull the handle backwards (towards the driver), the slewing direction is reversed.

Handle 2 or pedal 5 is for boom telescopic manoeuvre: pushing the handle forward extends the lifting arm; when the handle is in the middle position, it keeps the lifting arm still; pulling the handle backward retracts the lifting arm. Pedal 5 is optional, instead of handle 2 and handle 3 for luffing manoeuvre: push the handle forward to land the boom.

Handle 4 and brake pedal 6 are for hoisting operation and hoisting brake; pull back the handle to hoist the load; when the handle is placed in the middle position, the hoisting power is cut off and the load is kept motionless (if equipped with automatic brake) or the load is controlled by depressing the brake pedal; push the handle forward to lower the load.

Modern cranes are widely used with pilot operated controls, and this is a common arrangement for crane manoeuvring devices.

Handle 1 and pedal 5 are for hoisting II (sub-winch) and slewing manoeuvres. Pulling the handle backward raises the load; when the handle is in the middle position, hold the load stationary (if equipped with an automatic brake) or brake the load by depressing the brake pedal 5; pushing the handle forward lowers the load. Move the handle 1 to the left, the rotary table rotates to the left; when the handle 1 is in the middle position, cut off the rotary power; move the handle 1 to the right, the rotary table rotates to the right.

Handle 2 and pedal 6 are lifting Ⅰ and luffing control. Pull handle 2 backward to raise the load; when handle 2 is in the middle position, keep the load motionless (if equipped with automatic brake) or step on brake pedal 6 to brake the load; push the handle forward to lower the load. Move handle 2 to the left to raise the boom; when handle 2 is in the middle position, keep the boom still; move handle 2 to the right to lower the boom.

Handle 3 for boom extension and retraction control.Pushing the handle 3 forward, the boom is extended; when the handle 3 is in the middle position, the boom is kept immobile; pulling the handle 3 backward, the boom is retracted.

Generally, the handle 3 may be a separate handle, and the telescoping function of the boom may also be a back and forth movement of the handle 1. In addition, a pedal 4 (available as an option) can be used instead of the handle 3. When the pedal is pressed forward (toe down), the boom is extended; when the pedal is in an intermediate position, the boom is kept motionless; when the pedal is pressed backward (heel down), the boom is retracted.
